Teammates then take turns guessing, trying to identify one agent at a time. If they guess correctly, they can keep guessing up to the number given in the clue. The first team to successfully identify all of their agents wins!

Codenames Rules & Gameplay

1. Set Up the Game

Arrange 25 word cards in a 5×5 grid. Spymasters receive a key card showing which words belong to each team and which word is the assassin.

2. Give a One-Word Clue

Each Spymaster gives a single-word clue and a number. The clue should help teammates identify multiple words connected to their team’s cards.

3. Make Your Guesses

Team members discuss the clue and point to the word cards they believe match. They may guess up to the number given plus one extra guess.

4. Reveal the Selected Cards

The Spymaster reveals each chosen card. It may belong to your team, the opposing team, a neutral bystander, or the assassin.

5. Continue Taking Turns

Teams alternate giving clues and making guesses. Correct guesses allow the team to continue, while incorrect guesses usually end their turn.

6. Win the Game

A team wins by identifying all of its assigned agents first. However, selecting the assassin card immediately causes that team to lose.
